The Facility

The Bio21 Institute's physical infrastructure has been developed as a building complex located on the University of Melbourne's Western Precinct.  It comprises the new $140 million building, plus physical links to the Veterinary Science School, and two refurbished annex buildings - the former CSIRO building (now refurbished as the Institute's business incubator) and a former animal house (refurbished as an insect field work and containment facility).

Complemented by a stunning seven-storey atrium, award winning design laboratories and cutting-edge platform technologies, the Bio21 Institute is positioned as a world-class research facility, offering a new model for industry engagement and innovative multidisciplinary research.

The Bio21 Institute building incorporates a number of additional facilities including conference facilities, a central atrium, cafeteria, meeting rooms and open breakout areas.

Platform Technologies

The Institute's research capability is underpinned by purpose-built laboratories and $25m of core instrumentation and related platform technologies. These include:

  • NMR spectroscopy
  • Mass spectrometry
  • Biomolecular interaction analysis
  • Nanotechnology facility, incorporating high-resolution electron microscopy
  • Synthetic chemistry

Research Transfer Facility

Visitor Laboratories

A complex of visitor laboratories called the Research Transfer Facility provides external users with access to Bio21 platform technologies and possible collaboration with resident researchers, research institutions and industry.
