Facilitating X-Ray Biophotonics - Physicists and Biologists working together
17 Sep 2008 to 19 Sep 2008
Venue: Bio21 Institute, 30 Flemington Rd, Parkville, Victoria (see Bio21 location map)
The ARC Centre of Excellence for Coherent X-Ray Science will host a workshop entitled "Facilitating X-Ray Biophotonics - Physicists and Biologists working together" at the Bio21 Institute, Melbourne.
The workshop focuses on high resolution imaging of biological samples using synchrotron and laser X-ray sources as well as pioneering electron and light microscopy techniques and protein structure determination techniques.
A number of top international and national speakers will be presenting their work. In particular, Friday September 19th will be devoted to biological aspects. The meeting will include the following topics and speakers:
Advanced Microscopy
Werner Kühlbrandt, Max Planck Institute for Biophysics, Germany - Electron cryo-microscopy Rainer Hientzmann, King's College London, UK - High resolution optical imaging Daniela Stock, Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, Sydney - Combining electron microscopy and X-ray crystallography
Protein Structure Determination
So Iwata, Imperial College, London, UK - High-throughput production of membrane proteins.
John Spence, Arizona State University, USA - Serial crystallography of proteins Jenny Martin, Institute for Molecular Bioscience, Brisbane - Protein Crystallography
Additional Features include a site tour of the Australian Synchrotron, poster & oral presentations and a workshop dinner.
Registration costs are very reasonable ($200 full / $150 student) and day registration is also available ($100 full / $75 student).
