The Wille group is part of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Free Radical Chemistry and Biotechnology, located at the Bio21 Institute. The Wille group's research aims to extend general and fundamental knowledge of the role of atmospheric pollutants on the free-radical induced ageing processes and causes of oxidative stress in animal tissues. This may lead to the development of novel drugs with the ability to step into and hold up these processes. Our research activities focus on the areas of free radicals in organic synthesis and bio-organic chemistry; the development of new synthetic methodology and studies of reaction mechanisms; computational chemistry for mechanistic studies and the design of new reactions; and investigation of the adverse effects of certain atmospheric free-radical oxidants on biological molecules using product and kinetic studies. Techniques include: photochemistry, electrochemistry, GC, GC/MS, HPLC (Bio21 equipment), LC/MS (Bio21 equipment & O'Hair equipment), modern organic synthetic methods, and computational chemistry. Uta Wille BioAwards / Prizes: Selby Research Award (2003), Hoechst Award for Diploma Thesis (1990) Qualifications: Diploma Chemistry 1986 (University of Kiel, Germany, 1988); PhD 1992 (University of Kiel, Germany, 1992); Habilitation (University of Kiel, Germany, 1999).
