Working in conjunction with researchers from Jadavpur University in Calcutta and the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, Dr Gras and the team from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, are focussed on developing functional foods based on dairy ingredients that aid digestive health and act as a form of preventative healthcare. Research includes the production, purification and concentration of milk-derived sugars called galacto-oligosaccharides.
The project was successful in gaining support under the first round grants awarded in 2007 from the Indo-Australian Biotechnology Fund - an initiative under the Australia-India Strategic Research Fund launched by the Prime Minister in 2006.
