Practical training programs to inspire young scientists

16 Oct 08

Researchers Drs Andy Hill, Heung-Chin Cheng, Ian van Driel and Tony Purcell are committed to providing opportunities for up-and-coming scientists.

The Bio21 based Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology researchers are taking a lead role in facilitating an innovative program which combines practical workplace experience with a traineeship for local high school students.

Each hosting a Coburg Senior High School student within their labs, they will enable them to spend one day a week for two years at Bio21 completing a Swinburne University VET Certificate III in Laboratory Skills.

The aim of the program is to provide students with practical experience within a working laboratory environment.  They perform simple tasks as they work alongside other researchers.  Their participation over the duration of the two year program allows them to essentially see projects progress over the period.

The training provided is recognised through the Federal Government's Australian Apprenticeships scheme and is run through the Victorian Employers' Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI).

The program aims to meet both the needs of employers and secondary school students.
