Venomdoc: Woodward Medallist for Science and Technology

Venom specialist Dr Bryan Grieg Fry, The University of Melbourne's 2009 Woodward Medalist for Science and Technology, is profiled in the Melbourne Voice. Bryan was honoured for his multi-disciplinary research that examines the molecular evolution of protein toxins in venomous animals. He is Australian Research Council QEII Research Fellow based in the Venomics Research Laboratory, Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology located at Bio21 Institute. "Venoms present a really rich opportunity for drug design and development because they're some of the most bioactive substances on earth and are exquisitely targeted," he explains. His research has explored snakes, lizards, jellyfish, platypus, komodo dragons and will this year cover Mexican vampire bats.
